Rebecca Freer: non.e

My collection is titled non.e , which is short for “non egrediar” meaning “with no escape” in Latin. It’s inspired by sensory overload, which is when your brain tries to process all of the sensory input of your environment at the same time, creating an overwhelming and inescapable experience. non.e translates this experience through engineered textile manipulations and unique engagement of both the conventional senses and proprioception, which is the awareness of your body and its relationship to its surroundings. Some of the techniques I’ve utilized include 3D printing custom shapes, freehand quilting fabrics to create new textures, and hand beading chewable silicone beads. The goal of non.e is to convey my personal experience with sensory overload and to connect people through the universal experience of sensation in order to foster compassion and understanding.
