Mary Cranford Yates: Hibiscus
Since Victorian times, the hibiscus flower has represented delicate beauty. Despite this, the flower itself is actually quite resilient. Hibiscus is a women’s apparel collection that captures femininity through a different lens. Different artifacts of womanhood are patchworked together to create a cohesive garment that reflects the means to make it while maintaining a wild, and free-spirited aesthetic. From the use of delicate fabrics, tea towels, blankets, handkerchiefs, and hand painted designs, the garments represent the name “hibiscus” by having an eclectic look while still being constructed with delicate items. Additionally, the use of a floral name is a nod to the different natural patterns and elements that are used throughout the collection.
