Julia Greene: Together Again
Together Again is inspired by the aesthetics and philosophy behind kintsugi pottery. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing pottery with gold. This treats the breakage and repair as part of the object’s history to be acknowledged and celebrated. This philosophy also outlines the beauty of the human experience. Everyone has a story in which they endure “breakage” and struggle with their imperfections. Then they will face the difficult, but empowering, opportunity to heal and grow from their experience. In the end, this damage can be viewed as beneficial because it builds a better, more nuanced self. With “Together Again” I aspire to bring those pieces back together by capturing the aesthetics of kintsugi pottery itself and providing the wearer with the confidence of someone who has fallen, gotten back up, and is now a stronger and more experienced person because of their story.
