Daryn Wilkerson: The Divine Feminine
Oftentimes, Black women are seen as aggressive and told we look like men and monkeys, especially if we are tall or muscular. This collection shows Black women in a feminine, ethereal light – simply as women. White peacocks represent divine feminity. Divine femininity, in many religions, is the feminine aspect of divine power. It’s a strong and unapologetic energy, but it’s also soft and loving. Black women do not have to be overly masculine or overly sexual. By implementing silhouettes, motifs, and fabric that emulate a peacock in one of the most traditionally feminine garments, a wedding dress, I hope to call out one way America boxes in Black women.
