Colby Hopper: Illume

Illume is a home decor collection inspired by biophilic design and strong surface design techniques. Biophilia is defined as the inherent human inclination to affiliate with nature. Biophilic design, an extension of biophilia, incorporates natural materials, natural light, and other experiences of the natural world into the modern built environment. Modern society has insufficiently supported the human need to connect with nature. Spending time in environments lacking a human to nature connection often results in sensory deprivation and negative feelings toward the location. Therefore, I was inspired to create a multi-sensory experience that utilizes surface design techniques and fiber studies emulating nature. The result of successful implementation of biophilic design deepens our connections to the world beyond ourselves. Utilizing a cheerful and cohesive palette along with strong embellishments and fabric manipulation, this collection seeks to target consumers and their senses to create a welcoming and enriching environment for their viewing.
