Lillian Richards: A Family Dinner

As a textile artist, I explore the relationship between the construction of a fabric and the printing and finishing techniques it is subjected to. This collection of fine art pieces is an exploration of family through woven and knit material. My work centers its commentary on family around the symbol of the dinner table, which many families use for a gathering of generations and traditions. I see my work as a way to convey the rich history of my family through portraiture of generations woven together and families blended. I use various materials, including indigo-dyed yarn, natural cotton and wool for ideal dyeing and lasering techniques, and synthetic fibers for innovative sublimation printing. As an artist, I hope to embrace the unique, inherent characteristics of textiles to enhance the way in which I design.
